Lukewarm tea (or coffee)

If you are anything like me you will have made yourself a cup of nice hot tea (or coffee for the strange people who like it) no less than a thousand times (especially in winter), then somehow managed to get completely and utterly distracted with something amazingly important *ahem*. Then you come back to it a while later and your memory is instantly triggered by the cup sitting there all neglected like. You think “a hot drink would be perfect right now!” Then you drink it with the highest hopes of satisfaction and just about vomit back into the cup. It’s lukewarm and utterly foul! Cold tea is even better than lukewarm, my goodness!

So maybe there’s something similarly distasteful to God when he tastes lukewarm and stale areas in our lives. Perhaps that’s why there is such a strong verse about getting vomited out of His mouth for being lukewarm and that He would even prefer you to be cold to lukewarm.

To keep a pot or a cup of tea warm it takes a constant source of heat applied to it. But remove the heat energy and leave it to stand in a room and what happens to it? Does the room heat up to match the cup of tea? On the contrary, the tea slowly loses its heat to match the temperature of the room. Likewise, take away the constant heat being applied to your life found in a relationship with Jesus Christ and you will soon cool to match the temperature and spiritual state of the unsaved people around you. The hotter you were, the longer it will take, but the more bad influences in your life the quicker you will cool.

That’s why I like the new name of the previous “Zeal” so much. If you have a constant white hot flame what evil is going to want to touch you? None.
