Of the essence

Our neighbour’s dog, Kimi, was a very trying dog at times. It would consistantly destroy all our fortifications over mums flower beds in order to lie in the warm dirt. These were no wimpy barricades either – rose spikes, string, bamboo sticks and all manner of weaponry were used to attempt to keep the flowers safe and sound, all to no avail. Kimi also had nasty habits of stealing the cat’s food, getting under your feet and avoiding car wheels at the last possible second.

But as annoying as that dog was at times, it was still always ready for attention and loved people. It’s funny you know, you never really consider how elusive time is and how quickly it is slipping by until something even remotely close to you is suddenly taken away. Kimi was killed today, run over by the Meter Reader’s 4WD vehicle. And although she wasn’t really that close to me personally it is still remarkably sad and gets me thinking about this gift we have been given called time.

“Killing time” is quite a popular expression amongst people, especially youth. We seem to think at a young age that it won’t ever run out. Like an endless supply of longevity. But however we choose to use time, it still remains a gift, and one that will someday end. Supposing we get asked to give an account of the moments where we chose to “kill time” when judged by God? What if He doesn’t function by our human perspective that it was only annoying time getting in the way between one event and another? Kimi’s life could have just as easily been a person playing in the driveway.  We really don’t know how long we have, and as difficult as it can sometimes be, I guess it’s best to simplify things to cherishing the people you love and taking nothing for granted.

”As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourishes. The wind passes over it, and it is gone; and the field shall know it no more. But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting to them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children.”

In the words of Gandalf – “All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you”
